The regular announcements from the rail service of “a person under a train” disrupting the journey to work. Pre-adolescent children being swallowed by house fires when the rage of their parents overwhelms the family home. The fact that so many children have stopped shooting for the stars and are shooting dead their fellow students instead. The drones. The bombs. The stabbings. The cannibalism.
Despite all of this we still have not realised that Forever is redundant. Forever stops us from saying “I love you today” because we will say it tomorrow. Forever stops us saying no to another bump of Cocaine tonight because we really did think we would wake up in the morning. Forever stops us saying sorry now because, well … give it time to cool down yeah.
Despite all of the signs we still think we have forever and a day left to live the lives we think we deserve. We continue to deny ourselves beautiful things. We continue to persecute ourselves. We look in the mirror and continually crucify every last detail about our phenomenal bodies, hanging ourselves on our mirror image. We still have not realised that our next minute (let alone tomorrow) is not promised. We still have not realised that life is a temporary thing.
